Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Tropical Storm Norma

The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana cautions U.S. citizens that, as of 7:00 a.m Pacific Time, the National Hurricane Center is extending advisories for Tropical Storm Norma. There are no coastal watches in effect as of this time, but interests in Baja California Sur should monitor the progress of the storm. Swells generated by Norma will begin affecting portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico and Baja California Sur this weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts. A Hurricane Watch or Tropical Storm Watch could be required later today for portions of the peninsula. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Norma is expected to become a hurricane by tonight. Temporary Closure of U.S. Consular Agency Acapulco

The U.S. Consular Agency in Acapulco will be closed today, September 14, due to weather conditions related to Hurricane Max. Hurricane Max is expected to make landfall today, Thursday, September 14, near Acapulco. The government of Mexico has issued a Hurricane Warning for the southwest coast of Guerrero, Mexico from Zihuatanejo to Punta Maldonado. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Max is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 5 – 10 inches with maximum totals of 20 inches across portions of the Mexican states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. These rainfall amounts may produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
